STAY OPEN TO NEW IDEAS AS YOU READ
Readers, tonight you should devote a good amount of time to read your historical fiction books. As you read, keep asking yourself, “What is the book really about?” Remember to stay open to new ideas as you read, as you did in class. Even if these ideas may not seem connected to your interpretation of the story, take note of them. These new ideas may take you on a journey of thought in ways that will surprise you. These ideas may inspire you to change your mind about your interpretation, perhaps more than once.
Leave a little time at the end of your homework time to do a quick write. Choose one of the thought prompts, and then go! Write fast and furious. Fill an entire page and then another. Three minutes and you’re done!
Now read your quick write and star your best thoughts. Then use those thoughts to add to or change your interpretation.

In the book Sadako, I thought it would be about a girl who had a dream to be a runner. She trains everyday as hard as she can. I thought that she would be successful until she had to go the hospital because she couldn’t stand up. Now I think that she will not be able to run anymore and will probably die because of her disease. She stays in the hospital 24/7 and doesn’t get to visit with her family and friends. If she dies she wouldn't even be able to say goodbye to her family. This makes me feel bad for her. When I die I will have my family right beside me. For her they won’t even get the news until the next day.

Yes, like Reese said, I used to think that the book was going to be about Sadako becoming her dream: a professional runner. But now I think differently. Suddenly when she falls to the ground running, she has to go to the hospital. It turned out that Sadako had Leukemia. This tells me that Sadako won't be able to have her dream. She has to sit in the hospital all day long. This is sad. She has an unexpectedly disease, and then.........she never woke up from Leukemia. In other words she died.

In the book, "the Watson's go to Birmingham lots of things are happening! But I am going to be telling you about how the family does not know something bad that is about to happen, at the beginning of the book they were all huddled together wearing almost 7 layers and 3 pairs of socks to keep themselves warm. They were watching the news and the weather forecast, it said that Birmingham was almost 73 degrees. So they immedioltly thought that they should go and live there for the summer. Then Kenny and Byron had to scrape the ice off of the car windows for the drive to their aunt's house. Then Byron got his lips stuck to the window! But what they don't know is that Birmingham is having a huge fight to try and take all of the blacks out of the country and live a black free life. I think that at the end of the book they are going to end up being killed or taken away. I definotly recommend this book because of the great writing, characters and similes! Though this book is great it has a lot of bad words and mean jokes so watch out for that! My favorite part is...

Read the book to find out foe on the weird Watson's and for facts on what is going on in Birmingham! BYE, and have a good day!

I think the real meaning of Fever is that no matter what happens, follow you dreams and stick with your family. I think this because when the Yellow Fever hits, Mattie still dreams about going to France and becoming a clothing designer. When she is forced to leave, her dreams are dashed. But slowly and slowly, she realizes she can still go to France. For the stick with your family, she stays by Grandfather's, Mother's and Eliza's side, and they stay by her's.

in my book Sounder, i think its about a dog who really shows the boy a lesson and how you can be so connected. For example in the beginning it said there is no dog like sounder. Later to the end the dog comes back with one eye, 3 legs, and one ear and the the didn't care he was just amazed that his dog was alive. this tells me that no matter what you should always love someone or something. that is what i think this book is mostly about.

In my book the witch of blackbird pond I think it's about sticking with your friends. One example is when Kit found out that Hannah Tupper was a witch she still helped Hannah and was still her friend. Also when Kit was about to get hanged Nat brought a little girl named Prudence who the only one who could save kit.

In the book "Watsons go to Birmingham" they move to a city in Michigan and they moved there because on the news it said that it was 73 degrees during the summer and they moved there but during the winter it felt like it was below zero! They had layers and layers of clothes because it was so cold. Just before they went to school their mom put them in about 7 jackets, 6 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of socks on, and two pairs of shoes. when they were inside the school they took off the layers and when they got to the last layer of clothing they were soaked with sweat. Then everyone laughed at them and they got made-fun-of a lot after that. I would hate to get made-fun-of because my mom made me put on so much clothing.

In my book the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Charlotte goes on a boat called the Seahawk to her home in Providence, Rhode Island. At first she was just a passenger and liked captain Jaggery. Later, she finds out that Captain Jaggery is means to the crew and thinks she is a just weak girl. Because of this she turns into one of the crew to prove she is strong. However, Captain Jaggery and the rest of the crew doubt her. She does do her work and does not complain. She proves them wrong and ends up being captain later in the book. The the theme in the book is to to not judge people by gender or race.

When I first read that Mr. and Mrs. Watson were going to send Byron away to their strict grandmother's house for being bad, I thought that it wasn't fair. Now re-reading the text, I think he deserved to be sent away after not following several important rules. One thing that I couldn't believe was that Kenny, his own brother, thought YES Byron is leaving for the summer. I used to think Joetta loved her oldest brother more than anything in the world, but now I think that she sometimes doesn't like Byron. I think this because when the parents announced that Byron was leaving for the summer she gave a slight smile. This showed that she felt happy about him leaving too.
My ideas about Byron are complicated. In a way I think Byron is nice because he helped Kenny feel confident with his crooked smile. Another time was when he stuck up for Joetta. On the other hand I also think that Byron is mean and self centered. For example Byron has bullied about every kid in school. He has also burned tissue paper down the toilet. On the surface I think this story is about the struggles of the Watson family but as I read more into the book I am finding out the story is also about a bigger topic of all African Americans and the civil rights movement.

In my book The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle I think the message in the book is don't judge a book by it's cover because the crew said that there was no place for a girl on the Seahawk but later in the book the crew's starts to change. When Zachariah dies or fakes his death Charlotte wants to become part of the crew and when she is proven worthy the crew yells huzzah. Then when Captain Jaggery falls into the ocean and dies Charlotte becomes captain for the rest of the trip. Then Captain Jaggery wiped Zachariah just because he was black and no one else on the boat was. So Zachariah was forced to hide in the brig so Jaggery wouldn't find out he was there. So I think the message is don't judge a person by what they look like or what there gender is but what the do.

In my book Sugar by Jewell Parker Rhodes, I think that Mister Wills is changing. I think this because at the beginning of the book he was very strict, for example Billy and Sugar would have to sneak out at night just to see each other which they barely could because it is dark out, and because of that soon they found out and Mister Wills had threatened that if it happens again that Mister and Missus Beals (The people who take care of Sugar since her parents died) Would be sent away or that if she was still a slave he'd have her whipped. As where now Sugar fought all she could to go in and see Billy who was sick and soon she helped him and Mister and Missus Wills were very gratefull for her help to Billy which now he is better. Also, Billy wanted to start working with cane and when he did the overseere Tom got mad at him. With Tom getting mad at Billy that led to Sugar getting annoyed and putting a Chinese trap around his fingers and he got very mad and was heading to whip her but Mister Wills soon fired him and said get out of this property. This tells me that he has changed and has become more sensitive about what others think and want to fight for and also has become more caring and kid.
To add onto this idea now he is being very nice and has been allowing billy to give them 2 brakes which they have never even gotten ONE before.

Hi guys! So in my book The Slave Dancer, I have a theory. My theory is that the stolen egg is a symbol and the author put it into the story on purpose. I think this is a symbol because since the egg was stolen form the captain, it is just like how Jessie was stolen from his family. When the captain got really just about a little egg, how would he feel if his family got taken away from him. So I think that this is a very important part and symbol in the book because you should always follow the golden rule, "treat people the way you want to be treated. I can not wait to keep on reading!!!!!

I think the watsons are going to move to a white neighborhood. I think this because in the passage it says that every neighbor of the watsons thought that they were a pretty weird family, and they got a video player which tells me that they need something to entertain them on the way to Bermingham, Alabama.

Hi! It's Sienna, in the book inside out and back again it's mostly about a girl who has a hard life and is waiting for her dad to come back from war. She has siblings and a mom and even though they are divorced her mom still misses dad.

I use to think that the witch of blackbird pond was a boring book in the beginning but know sense I read it it has been pretty enjoyable to read. My club thought it was about hannah but I thought it was about kit. Some of my ideas about kit are complicated in a way I think hannah is just giving her tips but on the other hand she was brave to sail all the way from barbados to connecticut all by her self!.

my book is called The watsons go to Birmingham. At first I thought It wasn't going to be about How whites didn't like blacks . But now that I think about it the author is just trying to ease into the book like every good author. But now I think that when they move to Birmingham things are going to get big and bad.

In Fever 1793, my best guess to the theme of the story is that "In life, when you do things, be prepared for them to go wrong (they usually do). If they don't, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
