Readers, you have been reading your historical fiction books in class. Tonight I want you to do some research about the time period in history that you are reading about. When did the book take place? Where did the book take place? What was going on in history during this time (be specific and explain)? How did this affect the characters? Write long and strong about your books and how history affected the story!

In my book it took place on a little ship called the" Dolphin." And the boat is not big so that effects the characters by having not a lot of space on sea and you can't get off. An example is that if you had to make money for you're family, and everyone was screaming and yelling. How would you keep the family controlled and also try to make a lot of money for you're family.

The book Fever takes place in Philadelphia, 1793. Right now, the Yellow Fever epidemic is RAGING! Full on RAGE MODE! Yellow Fever is a fever caused by mosquito bites, like Malaria. Nowadays, you can get vaccinated for Yellow Fever. But back then, no one knew what it was or how to stop it.

I don't know the exact year, but my book takes place after the civil war in the nineteenth century.
This effected the boy because back then, people just chained up bad people (or not) and took them to jail. They did this to the boys dad.

In my book Sarah Plain and Tall I do not know when my book takes place, but I know that they live in huge plain fields where the town is not walkable you have to drive a wagon a little ways, what is going on in my book is that Sarah went to live with this family because there mom had recently died and they decided that they were lonely and wanted a mom and wife. So soon Sarah and their dad our going to get married. This effected the characters because before their dad was not as happy as he was when his wife was alive, he would sing, but ever since he had not then Sarah came and he was happy again. It changed Caleb because he never really knew his mom and now he is more happy that he has one and hasn't wonderd about his mom ever since. Lastly, this has changed Anna I think because she had knew her mom more than Caleb did and grew to love her and now another person is coming into her life, this tells me that she might be a little worried or sad kind of a mix of emotions.

I would like to add on it is in 30th century so when they did not have things like tv. but after the mom died Papa was thinking of having another wife. But since Caleb was born and the mom died the day after so he did not know so much about his mom and he is asking questions so he can know a little bit about his mom.
But he still loves Sarah, Anna, and Papa but he wants his mom that gave birth to him, but he stills has fun

The book Shiloh takes place in West Virginia. It takes place in around the 1800s, when people abuses animals and that made my main character (Marty) feel sad.

I am reading "I thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly." This book took place in Mars Bluff, South Carolina in 1865. There was a war going on at the same time fighting for the slaves to be free. Patsy (the main character) is a slave but doesn't know this is happening. This affects her because she thinks that it is normal being a slave but it is not. She doesn't know the outdoors. She is treated poorly by Master and Mistress. stays in a kitchen all her life. She is forced to work all her life.

My book The Witch of blackbird pond it takes place in Wethersfield 1864. Wethersfield is at own in the woods and they have to do there own work. My character Kit is not used to it because she grew up on the warm island in Barbados. Her father was a very rich man and had slaves. This why she is not used to working.

I am reading the book The True Confession of Charlotte Doyle. The book takes place in Liverpool. It is 1832. It is very busy there and it is hard to get around.

This affects the character because it is hard to move everything and she is trying to get on a boat to America. It is harder for her to see where she is supposed to go and she could easily gets lost with all those people.

In my book there is no exact time but i think it happens in the 19 hundreds. In the book it said that they hurt each other a lot so that tells me that there was a lot of pain.

In my book The Witch Of Blackbird Pond, Kit and Jutith were at the field , when Jutith was telling Kit about the witch of black bird pond. I think that she is actually a witch because if her house flooded and no one knows where she hid during the flood, she could have teleported or used magic to not get wet or to not drown. I think this because in the text it said that the witch was at the field the next day not tired(from magic) and did not look wet. That seems kinda suspicious. And if everyone in Wethersfield calls her the witch of blackbird pond, then people proably think that she is a witch. I also think that if all of the towns people try to move her because she might cast a spell on something, then that might be why they want to move her. At this time (1687) everybody belived in witches and witchcraft, So if they belived in witches and witch craft, this probably affected the way that they think about the witch. I think this because people now in 2017 don't normally belive in witches, but in there time they belived in witches. I think that I the witch was in our time, then people would not think that she was a witch. I can't wait to keep reading!!!!

The Watsons go to Birmingham is a historical fiction book that takes place in 1963. The Watsons are moving to Birmingham, Alabama. The family moves into a white neighborhood and the youngest member of the Watson family does not understand why she is being made fun of for her skin color. Her brother Byron was a bully at his old school but now he is being bullied for being black. During this time in history, our country was going through the Civil Rights movement. This meant that African Americans had different rights than white Americans. The laws in the South kept back and white people separated in public places for example like schools, churches, movie theaters, and transportation. The year that this book was written people Marched on Washington to protest the segregation. There were peaceful protests but also a lot of violence during this time. Martin Luther King gave his "I had a Dream" speech the year of 1963.

So I was reading Fever 1793. It takes but a mosquito (an infamous type of fly) bite to kill a full-grown primate of any species (including Homo Sapiens). Infected mosquitoes and refugees from the sickness swarmed Philadelphia in 1793 on August 1st. The resulting amount of bites lead to an epidemic of yellow fever until frost killed the mosquitoes on November 9. By that time, over 5,000 people had died from disease. In October, casualties spiked to about 100 people infected every day in Philadelphia. Fortunately, only about 7.5% of people were fatalities. The first stage occurs after about three to six days of infection. Chills, fever, headache, back pain, fatigue, vomiting, nausea, muscle pain, and loss of appetite happen during this time. Fifteen percent of cases move on to a second, toxic stage involving liver damage, which leads to yellow eyes and skin (which is probably where the name comes from), abdominal pain, and bleeding in the mouth, eyes, and the gastrointestinal tract cause vomit with blood inside. 20%-50% of the toxic cases are fatal.

The book called shiloh takes place either the late 1700's or the early 1800's.
I think this because this book uses poor grammar, and in this book, people abuse animals, and hunt a lot.
Also, there is a game warden.
I don't think that there are still game wardens around, but I do think that there were game wardens around back then.

My book fever 1793 is in 1793 (du) and in August. It takes place in Philly and in the Cook Family CoffeeHouse (not a real place). Yellow fever has broken out by the docks. Philly has to try to keep population because thousands are fleeing the city because of the dreaded Yellow fever. 5,000 people were listed to be dead between august 1st and november ninth

My book is The Watsons go to Birmingham and the book takes place in so far in a very cold place that makes the whole family cuddle up on the couch with 15 layers on! When the book takes place is in 1963. In Birmingham there is a war, whites are trying to take away ALL of the blacks in Birmingham! Nice whites risked their lives and hid blacks in their basement or in their attics so that the blacks wouldn't get arrested or taken away! But if the whites got cought

In the book Sarah, Plain, And Tall the mother had just recently died. Before their mother had died Papa and their mom used to sing a lot of the time. This effected the father because he is more depressed now than he used to be. When his kids ask him why he doesn't sing anymore. All he answered to that was "I forgot all the old song.". This effected Caleb because he never had a mother for all of his life. When Sarah came he got fairly excited. But also at some points in the book he got worried because he thought Sarah was going to leave. The setting in the book is in the plains part of the U.S. like Illinois and Kansas. This book was based in the late 1890's. During this time they didn't have cars or TVs. They had to drive around in wagons and instead of watching TV they rode horses, made food, and took care of all the animals and plants.
